Workshops

Artist in a red dress and hat painting outside

I’d love to have you join me at these upcoming workshops!

Teaching Philosophy

The goal in all of my workshops is to give you the foundational principles upon which to build your own style.

My workshops are meant to teach concepts so that you can go on to capture whatever sparks your interest.  They are not setup like the popular “Paint-and-Sip” classes, which means that you will not walk away with a painting ready to hang on your wall.  Instead, my goal is that you leave with a solid base of understanding and tools so that you can have the knowledge to paint subjects that you love with confidence — in your own style.

I am a pathologically curious person and a lifelong learner.  I love to geek out about art!  Teaching gives me an outlet for all of the cool and interesting things I’ve learned and am excited about.

My workshops are intended for adult learners.  However, I taught elementary and middle school art for five years, so I know how to break-down complex concepts into easy-to-understand steps.  If a self-motivated, art-loving young teenager wants to join the group, I’m sure they will be able to keep up and find value in what is taught.

Seeing and Painting Values

Establishing Lights and Darks

The lightness or darkness of a color is called it's "value". I call the value structure of a painting its bones--the foundation upon which the painting is built. It can be tricky to get mesmerized by the beautiful colors and not be able to differentiate the lightness/darkness of the color. This class will introduce you to several tricks and tools for seeing, remembering, and painting values in an easy-to-use manner. If you are looking for a one-day class that will level-up your painting skill, this is it!

Plein Air Workshop

Outdoor Painting on Location

This is a two-day workshop. Each day starts with a demonstration/ Q&A in the morning. After lunch, each artist-learner will paint independently with individualized guidance from me. The location of the workshop is ideal for a plein air class--it will be held on a private family farm, so no public distractions to contend with while you are first starting out. There are so many subjects to paint--flowers, an old barn, cows, fruit trees, and the Kinnickinnic River runs through the property!

Sat. - Sun., Aug. 23-24, 2025

9 am - 4 pm each day (with one hour lunch break)
Location: Green Pastures Family Farm, River Falls, WI.
Cost: $240, bring your own plein air setup. Supply list coming soon. If you need to rent an easel/setup, check with Naomi for availability. Additional fee applies.
Bring your own lunch. No restaurants nearby.
Minimum 4, maximum 10 participants.

Overnight Lodging Available On-Site

Green Pastures Family Farms has an adorable 2-unit cottage on-site that is available for rent. The owners have graciously blocked off cottage rental so that workshop participants get first dibs that weekend. They will release the dates a month before the workshop if still vacant. Because they are blocked for us, email Alexa or Scott to make a reservation: hello@greenpasturesfamilyfarm.com. Follow button to see photos on VRBO.

Prior Painting Experience Recommended

Plein air painting is the "Extreme Sports" equivalent of painting. You will want to have some comfort level of painting before trying it outside.
